WATERLOO GHOSTS OPEN TEAM WINS PROVINCIAL CHAMPIONSHIP IN INAUGURAL SEASON!
This was the first year that WMGSA has fielded an Open Team (what use to be called junior) and I would it was very successful. The goal of having this team was to keep the older girls (college and university students) still playing the game while they were home for the summer from their perspective schools. The schedule was very light simply because of the girl’s very busy schedules. We played three Ontario tournaments plus Provincials as well as a couple practices at the beginning of the season and a couple exhibition games through-out the season. Unfortunately our first tournament in May was completely rained out in St.Catharines. Our second tournament in June at Ancaster Community Center Park the girls played well and finished 4th. Our third tournament in July at Innerkip Sportsfield the girls were starting to click together and we finished second to a very good Windsor team. Our last tournament of the year would be Provincials at Windsor Mic Mac Park. I had a really good feeling that the girls were starting to gel and would peak at the right time. We ended up having the toughest schedule with no games Friday night meaning we would be playing the extra game on Saturday. But the girls persevered and ended up winning the gold medal on Sunday and becoming Provincial Champions! Not bad for throwing together a bunch of local and few out of town girls together and being a first year team! Dawn Bodrug was named best pitcher of Provincials with an ERA of just 1.76 and we had several girls in the top batter race. I would like to thank WMGSA and the executive for allowing us to form an Open team for the first time and I hope it continues for many years to come. Regards; Derrick Nowe
